My recent furls
Wednesday, August 11, 2004 Wireless subversionFor some time now I've been trying to run a web service from an iBook using a wireless connection. I have succeeded! There are some snags though - at present it's necessary for someone wishing to connect to identify the machine name and/or IP address, and there's a chicken and egg situation there. Commercial operators, and some other largish organisations have managed to fix this, but I've not cracked it yet. Nevertheless, I can verify that it is possible. I have even taken this into events, and dynamically updated the web pages during the event. Perhaps the next step is to install Wiki software on the machine, and then other users will be able to send messages via the wiki. What is not currently possible is to link to the Internet at the same time. Perhaps Apple and others have considered this, and decided not to allow more than one connection. There could be legal issues if multiple connections via one portable machine were easy to do. For example, an ISP might object to the use of Internet connections by many users connecting to such a laptop device. Other problems might be that event organisers would wish to ban anyone doing this kind of thing on their premises, or at least restrict use. For example, at a sponsored show, it would be quite possible for someone to walk in with a laptop and run a web service including video and advertising for a competitor. There could be a lot of good uses for having wireless systems with multiple connections, so it would be a shame if legal constraints made this impossible in many locations, but one might still have to respect the constraints on behaviour imposed in some situations. posted by David | 12:58 PM
